OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography)
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging test that uses light waves to take cross-sectional pictures of your retina. With OCT, each of the distinctive layers of the retina can be seen in details that can be recognized down to micrometers.
At your appointment, we usually take OCT images of your macula and optic nerve. By imaging the macula, we can see if you have signs of macular degeneration, macular holes or epi-retinal membrane. These are often not visible with standard imaging.
By imaging the optic nerve, we can look at the thickness of the nerve fibers as they enter the nerve. When we have glaucoma, it damages these nerve fibers and they die, the thickness of the nerve fibers decreases.
In standard OCT machines, this thickness is compared to a normal database to see if the nerve looks like it has glaucoma.
Our new Heidelberg OCT can also do this, but has the advantage of having a built-in eye tracker. With the eye tracker, we can directly compare images from year to year to see if there is a reduction in your nerve fiber layer and compare you to yourself instead of a database. This allows us to diagnose glaucoma earlier.
