Sleeve gastrectomy surgery is also known as Sleeve Gastrectomy. In the operation, a large part of the stomach, approximately 80% of the stomach, is cut to reduce the volume of the stomach. The person will lose weight as food intake will be restricted by reducing the stomach. The stomach, which normally has a sac-shaped appearance, will take the shape of a thin long tube after this surgery. The cut stomach is irreversibly removed from the body. There is a part of the stomach that produces the hunger hormone, ghrelin hormone, which stimulates the hypothalamus region of the brain. In this way, there will be no decrease in the person’s feeling of hunger. In sleeve gastrectomy surgeries, the stomach valves called pylorus, which regulate the emptying of the stomach, are preserved. Since these valves are preserved, there will be no change in the digestive system of the stomach. You will only feel full more quickly by eating less. People with sleeve gastrectomy surgery can reach a feeling of fullness by eating less food normally thanks to their shrinking stomach. The purpose of gastric sleeve surgery is to enable the person to lose weight by eating less and consuming healthier foods. Gastric sleeve surgery can be performed open or closed.

This helps to decrease your appetite and cravings and prevent the impulses that cause people to regain the weight they’ve lost.

How is gastric sleeve surgery performed?

Most of the time, a sleeve gastrectomy is done by laparoscopic or robotic surgery. That means that instead of making a large incision (or cut) to open your abdominal cavity to access your organs, your surgeon will perform the operation through small incisions. This makes for an easier recovery, but some people may be better served by open surgery, depending on their conditions.

Gastric Sleeve vs Gastric Bypass Surgery

The little tube left over after a sleeve gastrectomy is utilized to store food, while the side of the stomach is surgically removed.

However, it does not help the digestive system. Ghrelin, the hormone that stimulates food cravings, is also surgically removed. After surgery, patients typically only need 1-3 ounces of food to feel full.

However, in gastric bypass, the stomach is likewise shrunk, and a section of the small intestine is blocked off so that food doesn’t even have to travel through it.

After making an incision in the abdomen, either little or large, a new stomach pouch is formed. Gastric bypass is similar to sleeve gastrectomy in that it can prolong fullness after a relatively modest meal.

The major distinction between gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy is that the former surgically removes only the stomach and a little portion of the intestines.
